(this isn't meant to mean anything about the shoe incident or how it's perceived)
Also, I've traveled a lot and things which are insults to people of another culture never seem to cross over and offend me. Even when explained to me that it's a HUGE insult it just strikes me as novel and fascinating.
This guy showed me the bottom of his shoes!! That's a National Geographic moment for me, not a chance for me to take offense. The only cues I seem to pick up on are the animalistic ones like balled fists or squinted brows or increased speaking volume, etc. Of course, if someone threw a shoe at me that would be different, but more because of the "THROW" and not so much because of the "SHOE" part.
It would have been bad ass if he would have caught the shoe and thrown it back at the guy. Who just ducks?
